From Perry Gershon:
I am pissed off!
The Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, said yesterday that state and local governments should declare bankruptcy if they find themselves in a financial hole due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Is he serious?
How in the world do we fight this crisis and bring jobs back if state and local governments are declaring bankruptcy?
Governor Cuomo called out what McConnell said as “offensive”, and “one of the saddest, really dumb comments of all time.” Exactly right.
Mitch McConnell is competing with Donald Trump to be the poster child for demonizing and politicizing a national health crisis.
But what I am really pissed off about is the complete and total silence from Lee Zeldin. Again and again and again, this guy never fights for us. Never!
Even his Republican colleague on Long Island, Peter King said the comments were “shameful and indefensible” and called McConnell the “Marie Antoinette of the Senate.”
But nothing from Zeldin. Nothing.
Nothing but his usual silence in the face of the most extreme in his own party.
Let me be clear, the money the states and local governments are asking for would go to our fire fighters, police officers, EMTs, and healthcare workers.
HEALTHCARE WORKERS!  This is who Zeldin will not fight for.
Folks, we need to defeat Lee Zeldin.
Perry

Gun Laws

To the Editor:

Lee Zeldin receives an A rating from the National Rifle Association, and to give him his due, he has certainly earned it. In December 2015, Zeldin was part of a G.O.P. effort to block debate about legislation that would prevent people on the “no fly list” for suspicion of terrorism from buying guns. In 2017 he voted for H.R. 1181, which would allow veterans deemed mentally incompetent to continue to own firearms, and in that same year he co-sponsored H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity bill.

The C.C.R. Act would override the sensible gun laws that New York legislators have worked hard to put in place and allow any person with a concealed-carry permit from another state (with weaker gun laws that don’t require a background check or safety training, for example) to carry their weapon in New York.

Law enforcement is overwhelmingly opposed to this bill for the simple reason that more guns on the streets means more danger for police officers, as well as for civilians. Even Zeldin’s fellow Long Island Republican, Peter King, voted against C.C.R. Why is Zeldin for it? Could it be because doing the N.R.A.’s bidding helps fill his campaign coffers? I would ask him, but since he no longer holds town hall meetings with his constituents, I can’t.

Perry Gershon, running against Lee Zeldin in November, supports requiring background checks at the national level when buying a gun, among other common-sense measures. A vote for Perry Gershon on Nov. 6 is a vote for responsible gun laws.

Sincerely,

CAROL DEISTLER

On December 14, Steve Bannon will be in NYC fundraising for Rep. Lee Zeldin. It’s Bannon’s first fundraiser for a House Representative, and we have to show up big if we’re going to make it his last.

After Steve Bannon was ousted from the White House (we helped do that!), he set his sights on Congress with a plan to elect extremists who support Trump and his white supremacist agenda.

We need to make it clear that Steve Bannon and his white supremacist agenda are NOT welcome in New York or in Congress.

Help us bring our message to Rep. Lee Zeldin and every Member of Congress: if they’re willing to threaten our communities by giving a platform to Steve Bannon’s hateful agenda for their own political gain, we’re going to do everything in our power to hold them accountable.

Share and invite your friends, and sign our petition: http://www.weveseenthisbefore.org/zeldin_dump_bannon

We are coming for you Lee Zeldin

Is Peter King (NY-02) Going to Retire? https://resistancesuffolk.wp.urdemo.website/2017/11/30/is-peter-king-ny-02-going-to-retire/ Thu, 30 Nov 2017 15:08:36 +0000 https://resistancesuffolk.wp.urdemo.website/2017/11/30/is-peter-king-ny-02-going-to-retire/ Continue reading →]]> Republicans are leaving the U.S. House at the highest rate in a decade.   Nathaniel Rakich, a reporter with 538, has analyzed the Republican exodus and finds there are 2 groups: those that are moderate Republicans and belong to the so called “Tuesday group”, and those that are being forced out of subcommittee chair positions because of term limits.  Based on these 2 criteria they have created a list of congressmen most likely to join the retiree list.  Another indicator is the total amount of money raised for the 2018 race: a congress person who is contemplating retirement will not actively be raising funds.

The list of likely retirements coming in 2018 was summed up in a table (see below). Chris Collins from NY-27 makes the list.  But congressman Peter King from Long Island gets a special note:

“Maybe the likeliest retirement prospect is New York’s Peter King, who is both a Tuesday Group member and the term-limited chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence. He’s also raised a pitiful $294,848 and has one of the lowest Trump scores in the Republican caucus.”
